The REAL bully is John Kreese. By the time Daniel officially involves Miyagi, Daniel is done with the conflict, he simply wants to stop getting beaten up and he's worried (perhaps wrongfully) that he will continue to be in danger unless he can get someone to officially squash the feud. Daniel comes to the Kobra Kai dojo with the intention of declaring non-hostility, but its John Kreese, not Johnny, that not only refuses but actually fuels the negative traits of his students and encourages violence against not only Daniel but Miyagi too, who is a grown man. Miyagi sees Kreese is a far bigger problem than Johnny, and he also feels his honor is being challenged (You don't do that with old school Japanese dudes) so he set's Daniel onto a path of more conflict. Up until that point both Daniel and Johnny share responsibility for the escalating conflict because of a lack of understanding of each other's perspectives. Daniel makes the first move on Ali as he's new in town and doesn't have any friends, but does not realize Ali is already in a fight with a current boyfriend, Johnny, whom unbeknownst to Daniel has been with Ali in a somewhat serious relationship for 2 years (which is an eternity in High School years. On the beach, Johnny just wants to talk but then gets unreasonably aggressive when Ali doesn't... this aggression triggers Daniel's hotheaded Jersey chivalry and then Daniel becomes the aggressor and winds up paying for it. However. though its easy to point out Daniel's flaws and contributions to the escalation (like the Soccer incident being entirely his fault, or the halloween party) don't forget that Johnny officially lost his cool after being doused with water. Johnny and friends succesfully run Daniel down and give him a good kicking, but Johnny is so pissed and angry that even his friends start to pull him away in an attempt to stop him from causing serious damage. the beating goes beyond what is responible very quickly, and the situation honestly becomes dangerous as Daniel can no longer stand and Johnny continues to wail on him, which is ultimately when Miyagi steps in to save the boy a serious hospital visit. Yes, Daniel is much more responsible for the situation than he lets one or realizes, but up to the point where Miyagi and Kreese meet, the escalation is at both boy's fault.

Terrific drama about a teen (Ralph Macchio) who moves cross country with his mother but soon finds himself under attack from a group of teens. After he's brutally beaten, Mr. Miyagi (Pat Morita) makes an agreement to enter him in a tournament if the kids allow him time to train. If you read many reviews of THE KARATE KID, even the positive ones, you're probably going to see the word manipulative several times. There's no denying that this film is predictable and there's no denying the fact that every scene tries to manipulate the viewer into a certain emotion but who cares? THE KARATE KID is without question one of the best films of the decade and it's also one of the best of its type from any era. There are so many reasons why this film should have fallen flat on its face but a lot of credit has to go to director John G. Avildsen because he makes sure that things never get corny and he is so terrific at building up the characters and the drama that you can't help but get caught up in everything you're fed. I think most people will be able to connect with the Daniel character and Macchio does a terrific job at bringing him to life. Morita gets the role of his career and simply kills it and ends up becoming one of the most memorable good guys in the history of cinema. The two actors have such a warn chemistry that one can't help but feel their relationship grow and even more important is that it comes off real. The film has one of the greatest underdogs, one of the greatest good guys so we have to have a great villain and we get that in William Zabka and Martin Kove who play the main bully and his master. The two are such creeps that you can't help but hate them and want to see Daniel win against them. Elisabeth Shue also turns in a very strong performance as the love interest. It's really remarkable to see how terrific the cast is as all the leads and everyone down to the extras fit their roles perfectly. I'm sure many will see connections to ROCKY, which was also directed by Avildsen but I think this movie is even better. The drama is so real and the emotions that the characters go through are so dark and true to life that you really can't help but feel for them and what they're going through. The film is quite dark in spots but it's also got a terrific heart and message that really make it so memorable. There have been many imitators since (and a remake) but there's no question that THE KARATE KID is something special and something that really can't be touched.
